UK announces 2-year post-study work visa for international students

In a major boost for Indian students, the UK government has today announced a new two-year post-study work visa, expanding opportunities for talented international students to build successful careers in the UK.

The new ‘Graduate’ route will be open to all international students – including those from India – who have valid UK immigration status as a student and have successfully completed a course of study in any subject at undergraduate level or above at an approved UK Higher Education Provider. The visa will allow eligible students to work, or look for work, in any career or position of their choice, for two years after completing their studies.

This builds on UK government action to help recruit and retain the best and brightest global talent, as well as opening up opportunities for future breakthroughs in science, technology and research and other world-leading work that international talent brings to the UK.

Many students are going to UK, US and Australia for their degree and employment however Singapore is not less popular. These days many students are willing to study in Singapore due to its modern vibrant culture and excellent education system.  Education priority in Singapore is recognized a ‘global schoolhouse’ and numerous opportunities are provided for international students.

Grants are not repayable however in return you are required to sign a bond which will commit you to work for Singapore registered company for at least 3 years. Period of bond is longer for students of medicine (6 years) and dentist (5 years).

When we talk about US and Australia; visa is not heck of a problem very fair and simple visa policies. Once the Singaporean University accepts your admission you will be sent with a visa with their letter of approval IPA (In Principle Approval). This letter works as visa and can be used as a visa at entry checkpoint.

Steps you need to follow for visa processing:

  • First of all you need to submit documents like Form V-36 and V-16.
  • Acceptance letter of college,
  • Birth certificate,
  • Employment letter showing duration of work,
  • V 395 form filled by sponsor,
  • Bank statements stating SGD 40,000 for degree program.
  • Another document needed is Students pass.

You need to apply for it not prior 2 months before your course. To obtain this pass you have to sign in with special Students’ pass online Application and Registration system (SOLAR). A student pass allow you to work during your studies but not more than 16 hrs a week.

For non-native English speaker in order to be accepted by college or University need to present proof of Language proficiency. One has to pass ToEFL, IELTS or equivalent exam. It is important to have excellent language skills in English to study in Singapore.

Visa fee is SGD 40 and additional SGD 30 for those who require a single entry visa to travel to Singapore.

Once you have completed the form online you need to print it and submit in person to Student Pass Unit. Processing time varies from 5-10 days. If your application is successful then you will be issued with IPA letter from host in institution.
